What is the White Card | Read before getting a NSW White Card in Sydney!

Updated: Sep 10

If you plan to work in the construction industry, read this article and get well-prepared!

What is a white card in NSW (Sydney)?

According to SafeWork NSW, workers who want to carry out construction work in New South Wales must have a white card (or general construction induction card).

This is evidence that you have completed construction safety induction training, which is a legal requirement for all persons at a workplace where construction work is performed.

People who need a white card include:

Origin Institute White Card Training in Sydney NSW
  • site managers, supervisors, surveyors, labourers and tradespeople

  • people who access operational construction zones (unaccompanied or not directly supervised by an inducted person)

  • workers whose employment causes them to routinely enter operational construction zones.

The construction induction training (white card training) covers essential health and safety knowledge for working in the construction industry. The purpose of the white card training is to ensure all persons who work in the construction industry have essential occupational health and safety (OHS) knowledge so that the OHS risk in this industry can be reduced dramatically. Most NSW employers or worksites prefer that you complete this training in a face-to-face or approved online virtual class rather than an online self-paced course so they have confidence that you have received quality training and met their requirements.

How to get a white card in NSW?

To get a White Card in Sydney, you must attend a training session with a SafeWork NSW accredited Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and complete a nationally accredited unit (CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry).

Origin Institute is a SafeWork NSW accredited white card training provider in Sydney. Once the training is completed, you will receive a Record of Training (ROT) and a formal White Card.

Origin Institute runs white card training in more than four locations in New South Wales, so you can easily find a convenient training location.

What's essential before attending a NSW white card training?

1. 100 points of ID for NSW white card

Before attending the white card training in Sydney, you must bring 100 points of ID (Evidence of Identity) to your class.

The Evidence of Identity (EOI) Form (Click to Download) can help you prepare all required ID documents.

Please bring all original copies of the required ID documents to your class.

2. Unique Student Identifier (USI)

You need a USI number in Australia before attending any nationally accredited training. You can go to www.usi.gov.au to create or retrieve your USI number. The training provider can't issue the training outcome if a learner has no USI number.

3. Statement of Training (SOT) paper | The interim white card.

Origin Institute will have the application forms for a new white card application. Once you complete the training with us, we will submit them to SafeWork NSW on your behalf.

We will give you a SOT that you can use to prove you have completed the training until your new white card arrives. The SOT is valid for 60 days, but most cards are issued in less than 30 days. If you don't receive your white card, please call SafeWork NSW on 13 10 50.

4. Digital White Card

The NSW Government has introduced the digital white card, which can be obtained from the Service NSW app. For more information about the digital white card, please call SafeWork NSW on 13 10 50.
