Navigating VET in Australia for Overseas Students

Unlock the potential of vocational education and training (VET) in Australia for international students seeking practical skills and career advancement.

Decoding VET: A Guide for Overseas Students

International students are increasingly turning to Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses in Australia to gain practical skills and real-world experience. VET offers a unique blend of theory and hands-on learning, making it an attractive pathway for those looking to enter the workforce or advance their existing careers. Nationally accredited VET courses are designed and taught by industry experts and can be delivered by:

  • Government-owned technical and further education (TAFE) institutes for domestic students

  • Independent registered training providers (RTOs) for international students, and

  • Dual sector universities that offer VET and higher education programs.

Choosing the Right VET Course and Institution

All courses available to international studies are approved by the government through the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) registration system. Generally, most international colleges and universities will have a CRICOS number in the footer of their website. It can be very confusing to understand whether courses are only available to domestic students or also to international students so looking for the CRICOS number will help you know you are probably on a website that is suitable for your studies. Prospective students should consider factors such as course content, duration, costs, campus location, and available support services for international students.

Credit Transfer (CT) and Recognition of Prior Learning

RPL candidates are to provide current, quality evidence of their competency against the relevant unit of competency. This process may be directed by the candidate and verified by the assessor, such as in the compilation of portfolios; or directed by the assessor, such as through observation of workplace performance and skills application, and oral and/or written assessment. Where the outcomes of this process indicate that the candidate is competent, structured training is not required. Please contact us for more details on RPL/CT.

Any person on a construction site needs a construction induction card. Origin Institute offers the unit of competency ‘CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry’ with an allocation of 6 hours to all Certificate III in Carpentry, Certificate IV, and Diploma in Building and Construction students prior to undertaking their course. This program is conducted separately from other accredited courses and does not require students to have their confirmation of Enrolment (COE) for study. International students simply need to provide our team with their Visa status to verify on VEVO with the Department of Home Affairs their study entitlement. This unit of competency is recognised by WorkSafe Victoria for the registration of construction workers for workplace health and safety induction. In Victoria, Origin Institute runs White Card training in more than 25 locations, so you can find a convenient training location for you easily.
